A Mighty Fortress
1 "A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing; Our helper He, amid the flood of mortal ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe doth seek to work us woe; His craft and pow’r are great, and, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal. 2 Did we in our own strength confide, our striving would be losing, Were not the right Man on our side, the Man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord Sabaoth, His Name, from age to age the same, And He must win the battle. 3 And though this world, with devils filled, should threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us; The Prince of Darkness grim, we tremble not for him; His rage we can endure, for lo, his doom is sure, One little word shall fell him. 4. That word above all earthly pow’rs, no thanks to them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours through Him Who with us sideth; Let goods and kindred go, this mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His kingdom is forever. Amen." Author: Martin Luther ca. 1529 Translator: Frederick H. Hedge 1853 Scripture Reference: Psalm 46:1 "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble." 1 Jesus, Savior, pilot me, Over life's tempestuous sea; Unknown waves before me roll, Hiding rock and treach'rous shoal; Chart and compass come from Thee: Jesus, Savior, pilot me! 2 As a mother stills her child, Thou canst hush the ocean wild; Boist'rous waves obey Thy will When Thou say'st to them, "Be still!" Wondrous Sov'reign of the sea, Jesus, Saviour, pilot me! 3 When at last I near the shore, And the fearful breakers roar 'Twixt me and the peaceful rest, Then, while leaning on Thy breast, May I hear Thee say to me, "Fear not, I will pilot thee!" Author: Edward Hopper Music: John E. Gould Scripture: Psalm 93:4; Matthew 8:26; Mark 4:39 “Jesus, Savior, pilot me” is a fitting hymn for this photo of Lake Winnebago taken on a windy October day.. The words were written as a poem for The Sailor’s Magazine in 1871 by Edward Hopper, but he did not include his name when it was published. John E. Gould wrote the music unaware of who the author's name. In 1880, the two men met at an anniversary celebration for the Seaman’s Friend Society and learned of their individual contributions to the hymn. Although initially written for sailors, this hymn can be an encouragement to everyone during their lives. 1 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to His temple draw near; Praise Him in glad adoration. 2 Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, Shelters thee under His wings, yea, so gently sustaineth! Hast thou not seen how thy desires e’er have been Granted in what He ordaineth? 3 Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee; Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee; Ponder anew what the Almighty can do, If with His love He befriend thee. 4 Praise to the Lord, who, when tempests their warfare are waging, Who, when the elements madly around thee are raging, Biddeth them cease, turneth their fury to peace, Whirlwinds and waters assuaging. 5 Praise to the Lord, who, when darkness of sin is abounding, Who, when the godless do triumph, all virtue confounding, Sheddeth His light, chaseth the horrors of night, Saints with His mercy surrounding. 6 Praise to the Lord, oh, let all that is in me adore Him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him; Let the Amen sound from His people again, Gladly for aye we adore Him.
